#325 - A Sphinx and Her Pet.
I orginally started this piece intending for it to be a quick speedpaint of Luke and Kira, but as soon as I got to Kira's fur I was like, pffffffftno I definitely was not going to get this done in any manner considered "speedy" without fucking things up. So I took my time on it.

SOOOO YEAH ignore the fact that my background is pastede on yey. I couldn't get a good background idea in mind from the get-go, which only got worse as the CGing went on and I realized that, despite hitting a personal milestone with how I rendered Luke and Kira, I still lacked a bunch of basic skills with doing background work. I initially wanted to do a whole row of sphinx statues receding into the distance, so that it wouldn't be so wyrd to just have Kira on some random post with Luke and viewers would be all like O HAI I C WAT U DID THAR, but I had more problems than I thought with rendering that first column and so I gave up on that idea. And then I gave up on the background in general. Plus, with the way the perspective of the drawing is, there wasn't too many ways I could do it and make it look plausible (the setup in the WIP shots looked wrong to me)). Also, did you know that it's really fucking hard to paint dirt? No, seriously. You'd think that shit would be easy, 'cause it's just dirt and it just sits there, but noooooo it's a Pain in the Ass! :D!
Couple of closeups so you can see how messy I actually got.

Blah, that bracelet could've turned out better. I wanted it to be more obvious that it was a woven bracelet, but I had to zoom in like 700% to work on that thing in the first place.

lulz Converse.
...anyway, so who are these people and where are they at? Luke and Kira are from my NaNoWriMo'08 project, tentatively called Daemonsong. Both of them are descended from daemons: Luke has some incubus heritage, while Kira is what's known as a hybrid. Hybrids used to refer to those descended from the first offspring produced between creature-type daemons and pure humans/mortals, since something wyrd happened and the mating between the two actually produced an entirely new species, but by the time that Daemonsong takes place, most daemonic blood is diluted to the point of uselessness. (I swear there's logic in that somewhere, but it's been ages since I've worked with these characters so I can't remember what I BSed.) Someone like Kira, who still retains some sort of daemonic mindset (...whatever that means) and who still has enough daemonic blood to be able to shift between a human form and a creature form, is really, really rare. A "blood" (which is usually what other humans with negligible daemonic heritage are called) like Luke can only manifest his powers in realy subtle ways, unless s/he takes an artificial supplement to heighten those powers.
The setting is presumably somewhere in "jinxspace", which is a separate dimension where all the creature daemons live ever since they got perma-banned from Luke and Kira's home dimension of Seera Kai. There isn't much interaction between the two dimensions anymore, although Kira visits it on a ridonkulous temper job at the beginning of Daemonsong. I don't have a lot on jinxspace yet, and I have no idea if it'll play as big of a role in Daemonsong as I initially envisioned it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I actually envisioned Kira as large enough in her sphinx form for Luke to ride comfortably on her back. But I was having problems with getting the proportions right, so I decided to stick close to the proportions of a real lion(ness) for the moment.
