ART233 Mid-Term Bitching:

Two slides to identify, date, and explain/describe. Five minutes for each one.

Two pairs of slides to identify, date, and compare and contrast. Ten minutes for each pair.

Three essay questions given; choose one to answer, using 5-7 works of art to explain your points. 45 minutes.

Nearly one-and-a-half hours of straight writing on my ART233 final and I still didn't get to fully finish my essay. Which sucks not just in terms of how it'll affect my grade, but also because I kinda liked my essay and I thought I had a good idea. ;_; The question I chose was to compare and contrast the art patronage of the Egyptians and the Greeks, and my basic idea was that both cultures were motivated by very strong religious beliefs, but the nature of those beliefs were different and thus led to different works of art being encouraged and refined - i.e., the Egyptians were heavily focused on the afterlife, so the artworks commissioned by the rich ol' fogies of antiquity in Egypt were things that would let their soul live on somehow, like the tomb paintings and the ka statues. On the other hand, the Greeks really just wanted to give badass shoutouts to the Terrific Twelve up yonder on Olympus, so their art was focused on paying respects to their deities, from things as small as votive offerings that thanked the gods for help or asked Them for help to the big honkin' Pantheon on the Acropolis.

For all of my bitching of all the things I have to learn and make notes on, I really do like this class. Not just because I'm interested in ancient art (I'm finding that Mesopotamian art and mythology is starting to intrigue me a little more than usual - will need to do more research later), but also in how it makes me think about the function that art serves in a society, and what a piece of art says about a particular society at a certain point in time. Seeing how it was done in antiquity, I can draw parallels to my own artistic endeavors and those of others, and perhaps it'll make me sound more convincing when I try to express the belief that, yes, I believe creative endeavors are important, inherent, and essential to humanity. It helps me to find my own way in my current creative path.

On the bright side, I finally received a grade on my first paper of that class. "This is excellence. A." Still waiting on the second paper I turned in last week.

ANT120 spelunking:

We started sifting through the shell midden samples that we're supposed to analyze for our final group project. My group has a pretty substantial sample to go through. From what we picked through, we found mostly shell shards, obviously, some of which were burned, which means that there were a couple of bonfires going on in this particular area. Noteworthy finds included this spongy gray-green stuff which my professor said was probably lichen or maybe even the remains of an insect (wtf?) and a really tiny tip of a crab claw. Doing the sifting will be tedious, but I think we have interesting things to work with when drawing up our conclusions.

Reileen and the Prismacolor DVD:

Haven't heard back from the director yet. Am thinking it's very likely I wasn't chosen. Will continue making plans for ACEN '09 Artist Alley with friend, and will call Borders soon about performing.

The Other Stuff:

I finally managed to make a contribution to the Obama/Biden campaign. A whole $5! \o/;;

Also, my YouTube channel finally has watchable stuff on it. Go check it out (or not), comment (or not), and subscribe (or not).
