Sora, don't judge thrash!Metallica by Death Magnetic, which is a lot of crap in many respects. Listen to Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, which have a lot of good songs in them, and a good sense of dynamics due to bassist Cliff Burton's classical training (Ride the Lightning, For Whom the Bells Tolls, Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Orion, etc). Remember, just because it's thrashier doesn't mean the songwriting's not just as good. =3 >.>

And I hear you on the canned soda thing! It just tastes so much less plastic-y than bottled pop.
