Sears Tower to be renamed Willis Tower:

Sears Tower is no more.

The 110-story Chicago giant, the nation's tallest building, will be renamed Willis Tower under a leasing deal. The New York-based owners signed a lease with Willis Group Holdings, a London-based insurance broker, for 140,000 square feet.

Willis said it will consolidate five Chicago-area offices and move 500 employees into the tower. The company said it is paying $14.50 per square foot in rent and that the naming rights come with no additional cost.

NO! NO! A THOUSAND TIMES NO!

It's the fucking Sears Tower, d00ds! YOU DON' MESS WIT DAT, GET WHAT'M SAYIN'?????

It doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Maybe buildings aren't as touchy as ships about being renamed, but then again, maybe they are.

Besides, cityfolk have spent generations griping about country directions that go, "... past the Smith place, you know, that used to be the Jones placed before they moved out..." And now it's going to be "Willis Tower? Where the hell is that?" "Well, it used to be the Sears Tower..."

It's really stupid! This isn't just some local building - this is a worldwide icon of Chicago! Someone I heard over the radio said it best: for the company to change the name like this just reeks of pride, vanity, hubris. I hope we can change it back.

I heard about that, and it's like WTF??? You know no one's going to call it that ... It's the Sear's goddamn Tower. Not this Willis Fuckery. It's like what they did to Ridge mall ... sure they changed the name, but all the cool kids still call it Ridge.

WTF? No, really, WTF? That's like renaming the Carrier Dome the Geico Dome, or something (okay, sure, my hometown doesn't have the worldwide fame of Chicago, but still, an icon is an icon).

(And while I'm at it, it's National Airport, it will never be Reagan Airport to anyone who has spent any time in DC.)
